Director's biography

Emilie Praneuf was born in France in 1984 and has been living in Brussels since 2006. She is a part of Brussels-based artistic collective Collectif Wow! She has created and acted in theatre, cinema and radio. Emilie has also been experimenting with directing and photography. She is interested in creation processes or how to create with intimacy as a basis. She has been a self-taught drawer for many years. She discovered animation with Babines, along with video maker and motion designer Ychaï Gassenbauer, also a student in musicology, theatre and video, and sonorous/musical creations director Sebastien SCHMITZ, also teacher in radiophonic language at IHECS.

STATEMENT OF INTENT

« BABINES » (in French): « woman’s nature’s labia majora »

« At the same time slightly snub and attractively red-colored babines slightly emerging between the thighs. »

I chose this title primarily because I think it sounds good, and also Babines is appealing.

Also because it evokes women’s sexual labia and because the movies starts with them and their opening, and I wanted to invite the audience to enter the character’s intimacy and in that way play a game of auto-exploration. Because the lips of Babines sometimes are a curious eye, a mouth-expression of desire, or also a disinhibited sex.

Babines is my first animated movie. Oscillating between narrative and experimental movie, it deploys an inner imaginary realm of eroticism and (I hope) celebrates enjoyment and engages exculpation and positive representation of feminine pleasure. While the movie rather naively treats masturbation, it carries however an implicit invitation to regain control over our own pleasure, a fundamental contact we have with ourselves.

With Babines, I wanted to tackle sexuality in a relation of lightness and gentleness.

Drawings and animations have been vast fields of exploration during which everything became possible. These allowed me to create a poetry of pleasure, rhythmical and languorous at the same time, and to confer a trajectory to pleasure. In Babines, the shapes it takes are floral and vegetal. It comes in through the window on a mild summer afternoon, taking the shape of a flower petal carried by a soft wind, and through caresses and somersaults, stimulates our character’s senses.

It is as well with traditional animation and with interpolation that we managed to confer movement to this pleasure. It comes into being and progressively multiplies, sometimes clumsily and sometimes frenetically. Animation then develops its slips, swellings, transformations and metamorphosis.

Somewhere between foley, play of breathing and blowing, musicality and electronic sonorities, breaks and silences, Babines is conferred an additional sensory layer by sound. Sound also gives access to a deeper dimension, a maelstrom leading to an abyss of sensations that can carry us away and in which we can risk losing ourselves, to disappear and dissolve ourselves for the time of a watercolor-painted small death.

Babines primarily feeds on the sensations of sexual pleasure, and susurrates "jerk off".

Biographie du réalisateur Emilie praneuf est née en 1984 en france et vit à bruxelles depuis 2006. elle fait partie du collectif wow!, collectif d'artiste bruxellois. elle crée et joue pour le théâtre, le cinéma et la radio. emilie explore également la réalisation et la photographie. elle s’intéresse aux processus de création ou comment créer à partir de l’intime. elle dessine en autodidacte depuis de nombreuses années. c'est avec babines qu'elle découvre l'animation, et au côté d'ychaï gassenbauer, formé en musicologie, théâtre et vidéo, actuellement vidéaste et motion designer et de sébastien schmitz réalisateur de créations sonores et musicales et enseignant du langage radiophonique à l’ihecs.

babines (les) : « les grandes lèvres de la nature de la femme »

« les deux babines un peu retroussées et colorées d’un rouge attrayant qui passe un peu au dehors entre les cuisses. » mililot. (dictionnaire érotique moderne)

si j'ai choisi ce titre c'est d'abord parce que je trouve qu'il sonne bien et puis babines c'est alléchant.

et aussi parce qu'il évoque les lèvres du sexe de la femme et que c'est par elles et leur ouverture que le film commence et que j'ai voulu inviter le spectateur à pénétrer dans l’intimité du personnage et par ce biais à se prêter au jeu de l'auto exploration. car les lèvres de babines sont tantôt un œil curieux, une bouche- expression de désir, ou un sexe décomplexé.

babines est mon premier film d'animation. oscillant entre narration et film expérimental, il déploie un imaginaire érotique du dedans, célèbre la jouissance et, j'espère, participe a une déculpabilisation et une représentation positive du plaisir féminin. si le film traite assez naïvement de la masturbation, il porte cependant en filigrane une invitation a reprendre la main sur notre plaisir, contact fondamental avec nous-mêmes.

a travers babines, j'ai voulu aborder la sexualité dans un rapport de légèreté et de douceur.

le dessin et l'animation ont été de vastes champs d'exploration, dans lesquels tout devenait possible. ils m'ont permis de créer une poétique du plaisir, à  la fois rythmique et langoureuse, de donner une trajectoire au désir. dans babines, il prend corps dans le végétal, le floral. il débarque par la fenêtre, un doux après-midi d’été, sous la forme d'un pétale de fleur porté par un petit vent léger, de caresses en soubresauts, réveille tous les sens de notre personnage.

c'est aussi bien par l'animation traditionnelle et par interpolation que nous avons pu donner du mouvement à ce désir. il nait et se multiplie progressivement, parfois maladroitement parfois frénétiquement. l'animation développe alors ses glissements, ses gonflements, ses transformations et ses métamorphoses.

entre bruitages, jeux de souffle et de respiration, musicalité et sonorités électroniques, ruptures et silences le son donne à babines une couche supplémentaire de sensible. il est aussi l’accès à une dimension plus profonde, un tourbillon vers un abysse de sensations dans lesquelles on peut se laisser emporter au risque de s'y perdre, y disparaitre, se dissoudre le temps d'une petite mort peinte à l'aquarelle.

babines se nourrit principalement des sensations du plaisir sexuel et susurre «branlez vous ».
